Sandy grew up in Vandalia and attended Vandalia Schools.  Her Garrett cousins from Jonesburg were a big part of her childhood and they shared many good times together.  She and Saleem began dating when their mothers conspired together to have Saleem tutor Sandy, who had missed a lot of school due to appendicitis.  It worked, and they were married for 43 years before he passed.  Sandy was a member of the First Baptist Church of Vandalia and sang in the church choir. She was known for her sweet singing voice, and sang at many family weddings and funerals, often singing with her brother Dale.   Sandy loved Jesus with all her heart and serving Him through her church family was very important to her.  She taught Sunday school, Bible school, and served on the funeral dinner committee.  Sandy was a devoted homemaker and a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother. Over the years, she worked part-time at Hassien Bros. Grocery, Waters Furniture,  and as a medical office assistant for Dr. Rex Carter in Vandalia. Her family was always her priority, and spending time with her kids, grandkids and great-grandkids was what she loved the most. She loved getting the whole family together.  She and her good friend, Connie Strother, whom she called her sister, enjoyed many adventures and laughs together over their 63 years of friendship.
