Samuel Mayo Culwell passed away at 2:05 a.m. on Friday, October 29, 2010 at the Tri-County Care Center in Vandalia, Missouri. He was a life-long rural Gazette area resident and attended the country schools there. Mayo farmed since he was old enough to help his parents and enjoyed helping others in the community. He was a longtime member of the Central Union Church where he had also served as the treasurer and secretary. Mayo had been a school board member of the nearby South Carter School for many years. His priorities were God, family and country and he was a staunch Democrat. Besides farming, he enjoyed goose hunting, fishing and traveling; residing in Brownsville, Texas during some of the winter months over the years.
Born: April 8, 1915 in Gazette, Missouri the son of William Pearl and Eulah Demetrius (Adams) Culwell.
Married: Fayetta M. Heim on August 14, 1937 in Vera, Missouri; she preceded him in death on April 4, 2005.
Survivors include: two sons, Shannon M. and wife, Linda Culwell of rural Vandalia; Merle Lee and wife, Sue Culwell of rural Middletown, Missouri; one sister, Rose Lee Campbell of rural Vandalia; four grandchildren: Deborah and husband, Alan Barnes of rural Middletown; Sheila and husband, Gregory Frost of Vandalia; Jeffrey and wife, Sally Culwell of Columbia, Missouri; Shannon Jr. and wife, Felicity Culwell of rural Vandalia; 13 great-grandchildren: Treyson Culwell, Samuel Middleton, Annalynn Culwell and Reece Culwell all of Vandalia; Gavin Frost of Quincy, Illinois and Spencer Frost of Kansas City; Makenzie Barnes, Nicholas Barnes and Emma Barnes all of rural Middletown; Michael Culwell, Patrick Culwell, Isabella Culwell and Quintan Culwell all of Hallsville, Missouri; also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Preceded in death by: wife, Faye.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are encouraged to the Central Union Church in care of Waters Funeral Home, P O Box 84, Vandalia, Missouri 63382-0084.
