Mahlon Lee Stoutz passed away at 6:45 p.m. on Friday, March 4, 2011 in Columbia, Missouri following a long illness. He attended Vandalia public schools and the University of Missouri, earning a B.A. in linguistics and a Master's in Spanish. As a young man, he lived for eight years in Brazil, where he taught English, worked as a silk screener, developed a passionate love for soccer and made many lifelong friends. After returning to the United States, he taught Spanish as a graduate student at the University of Missouri and worked as a computational linguist in Denver, Pittsburgh and Boston before returning to Vandalia in 2005. He was an unusually talented linguist and teacher of languages, fluent in Portuguese, Spanish, French and Italian, with a working knowledge of a dozen other languages. At the Teragram Corporation in Boston, he helped to create complex dictionaries and design search engines and machine translation programs in multiple languages. Mahlon was widely read, well-informed and passionate in his opinions and his conversations will be sorely missed by his friends and family. He was friendly, generous and good-natured, and his friendships tended to last. He liked to make and drink good coffee. He loved to travel having visited Brazil, Portugal, Spain, France, Germany and England just in the last few years. Mahlon was a devoted father and grandfather. He adored his two springer spaniels, Federico, who died in 2003 and Fidelio, who survives him and he enjoyed the company of fellow dog-lovers in many cities.
