Joe K. Jerman passed away at 5:04 p.m. on Saturday, September 26, 2009 at the Audrain Medical Center in Mexico, Missouri. Joe had been a Vandalia area resident all his life. He farmed with his father in his early days. He partnered with Edward "Red" Hall where they ran a gas station, then they started purchasing grain, hauling lime and shelling corn. In 1958 they incorporated to form Hall & Jerman. In 1961 the name was changed to Jerman Farm Supply. Jerman Farm Supply was sold in 1989. Joe loved to ride his Tennessee walking horses and attend horse shows. He was a member of the Mt. Olivet Presbyterian Church and later attended the First Christian Church in Vandalia where he was recently baptized. Joe briefly served his country in the military in 1948.
Born: August 11, 1924 on the Jerman home place south of Vandalia to Blythe and Emma (Barney) Jerman.
Married: Marjorie L. Hays who preceded him in death in 1995 and then married Betty Wasson who preceded him in death in 2003.
Survivors include: two sons, Larry J. and wife, Linda Jerman of Columbia, Missouri; Gary R. Jerman of Vandalia; one daughter, Carol E. and husband, Wayne Grote of Bowling Green, Missouri; one step-daughter, Teresa and husband, Jeff Wasson of Nashville, Tennessee; one brother, Robert and wife, Helen Jerman of Vandalia; five grandchildren: Lisa Proctor of Jefferson City, Missouri; Tony and wife Penny Jerman of Bloomsdale, Missouri; Shawn and wife Christina Morgan of Austin, Texas; Melissa Outlaw of Vandalia and Amber Grote of Maryland Heights, Missouri; also survived by six great-grandchildren; one step great-granddaughter and four great-great-grandsons.
Preceded in death by: parents, both spouses, one brother: John Jerman; two sisters: Hazel Barnes and Nell (Fowler) Leake; one daughter-in-law: Frances Jerman; two step-sons: Merrell Wasson and Scott Wasson.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are encouraged to the American Lung Association, 1118 Hampton Avenue, St. Louis, Missouri 63139-3196.
