Janie Thomas

Janie L. Thomas, 68, of Vandalia Missouri, passed away on Saturday, August 10, 2024, at the University Hospital, Columbia Missouri.

Funeral services will be held at 12:00 pm, Saturday, August 17, 2024, at Waters Funeral Home.  Pastor Darin Clack will officiate  Burial will follow at the Vandalia Cemetery.

A visitation celebrating Janie's life will be held at 10:00 am until the time of service.

Janie is survived by her husband; Larry Wheeler of Vandalia, two stepdaughters; Nicole Shepard and Tia Johnson, one sister; Sue (Darrell) McCann of Florida, one grandson; Elijah Johnson, her sister and brother in laws; Kim and Myron Davis of Vandalia, Wendell Wheeler of Vandalia, William Wheeler of Vandalia, Beverly and Roy McQuaid of Vandalia, Opal and Ronnie Green of Vandalia, Donetta and Gus Lewis of Houston, Texas and Linda Douthard of Rock Island IL and Alfred and Gayle Wheeler of Warrenton and numerous other family relatives.

Janie is preceded in death by her mother; Verdella Flanagan and grandparents; Lonnie Flanagan and Naomi “Moore” Flanagan.

Janie was born on August 16, 1955, the daughter of Verdella Flanagan in Vandalia Missouri. 

She graduated from Van-Far High School in 1973. Professionally, she worked as an assistant administrator at the Tri-County Nursing Home until her retirement. She was proud of the Administrator license she earned while working at the nursing home. She held the oldest administrator license with the association.

Janie later married Larry Wheeler in 2009 where they lived happily until her death.

Janie enjoyed going shopping with her friends and family. She loved to cook and put on “feeds”. She cooked everything and it was delicious. Most of all, she adored helping anyone.

Pallbearers will be Wendell Wheeler, David Davis, Robbie Scott, Buddy Cockrell, Nathan Dooley and Bob Giltner.

Memorials are suggested to the New Harmony Christian Church in care of Waters Funeral Home.

Re-Pass will be held at the First Baptist Church multipurpose building.
