Ernest D. Cahill passed away at 12:25 a.m. on Wednesday, November 22, 2006 at Tri-County Care Center in Vandalia, Missouri. Ernie was a 1937 graduate of Oneida, Illinois high school and worked on a farm for several years. He then entered the U. S. Army Air Corps in July 1943 and was a pilot in central Europe during World War II. After getting out of the service in 1946, he farmed in Woodhill, Illinois until moving to the Vandalia area in 1952. While in the Vandalia area, he and his wife Dorothy made their home on a farm southwest of Vandalia and Ernie also worked for nearly 30 years at Harbison Walker Refractories. He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church where he served as an elder, church treasurer and president of the congregation. Ernie had been a member of the Vandalia Flying Club and enjoyed fishing, painting, writing poetry and all sports. He was a charter member and instrumental with several others in the area to start the Mid-Missouri Refractories Credit Union, which is now United Credit Union in Vandalia. He also prepared taxes for area residents for many years out of his home.
Born: February 13, 1919 in Hardin County, Kentucky the son of Birdle D. and Goldie (Spencer) Cahill.
Married: Dorothy Ann Failor in Cape Girardeau, Missouri on February 20, 1943; she survives at the home.
Survivors include: Dorothy of Vandalia; three daughters, Anne C. and husband, Danny Barnes of rural Vandalia, Missouri; Jane E. Cahill of Seattle, Washington; Peggy S. Cahill and friend, Joe Bartek of Bellingham, Washington; one brother, Martin Cahill of Galesburg, Illinois; one daughter-in-law, Donileen Cahill of Tampa, Florida; three grandchildren, Amy and husband, Travis Miller of Mexico, Missouri; Nancy and husband, Philip Trimm of Grand Juction, Colorado; Adam and Kristin Barnes of Dacula, Georgia; four great-grandsons, Ryan Miller, Alex Barnes, Josh Connelly and Jaxon Trimm.
Preceded in death by: one son, Spencer E. Cahill in 2006.
