Service:

Tuesday, November 25, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. at Waters Funeral Chapel, 500 S. Main Street in Vandalia, Missouri 63382.
Officiating will be: Rev. Frank Welch.
Music provided by:
Interment will be in the Vandalia Cemetery with full military honors.
Pallbearers: Scott Stinnett, Marvin Yager, John Dieckmann, Bo Stinnett, Richie White and Tracy Gash. Honorary pallbearers: Chester Alcorn, Charlie Alcorn, Harold Libby and Rick Stinnett.

R. Daniel "Danny" Smith Jr. passed away at 4:10 p.m. at his home in Vandalia on Saturday, November 22, 2008. Danny was a 1961 Van-Far High School graduate and shortly after graduating joined the U. S. Navy. Danny served onboard the U.S. ship Damato during the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962. After his return from the military, he worked in the maintenance department at Hercules Chemical Plant for over 15 years. He then worked part-time at Harbison Walker refractories before working 12 years at American Cyanamid Plant. Danny then went to training and become a corrections officer working at the WERDCC at Vandalia for nearly three years before his health prevented him from working longer. He was a member of the First Christian Church and a member of the Oddfellow Lodge in Vandalia. For his hobbies, Danny enjoyed raising and showing horses, fishing and spending time with his granddaughters.

Born: July 2, 1943 near Estes, Missouri the son of Ralph Daniel and Erna Lucille (Young) Smith.

Married: Jane Ann Alcorn in Perry, Missouri on June 5, 1965; she survives at the home.

Survivors include: wife, Jane of Vandalia; mother, Erna of Bowling Green, Missouri; one son: Brian Smith of Vandalia; one daughter: Cherie Dieckmann of Vandalia; two sisters: Betty and husband, Floyd Bontz of Vandalia; Patsy and husband, Don Lynn of Vandalia; two granddaughters: Brittany Dieckmann and Kati Dieckmann both of Vandalia; also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by: father; two sisters: Helen Stinnett and Donna Darnell.
