Barbara was born on January 21, 1941, the daughter of Robert and Merle (Burnett) Bolen in Jefferson City Missouri. Her parents precede her in death.

During her career, she taught at Bellflower Elementary School in Bellflower, Missouri, and Lebanon Elementary School in Lebanon, Missouri.
The family moved to the state of California in 1972, where she obtained her real estate license, and continued in that industry until her retirement in 2016.
Barbara loved reading and especially enjoyed her large collection of mystery novels. She also enjoyed all things ocean and beach. From the beautiful Northern California ocean sides and Palm Springs, to the white, sandy Florida beaches, and especially the lovely, tropical retreats of Puerto Vallarta and Hawaii – these were all a great source of peace and therapy for her over the years.
In her earlier years, she was able to visit Paris, France, Montreux, Switzerland, London, England, and Edinburgh, Scotland.
In later years, she found a lot of joy researching her genealogy where she discovered her deep Scottish roots, including a family castle built on land gifted to them by the legendary Robert the Bruce.
